| | | Elections for promotion to Scottish League Division One In 1893 professionalism was belatedly recognised by the Scottish Football Association and the Scottish Football League was expanded with the addition of Division Two. The competition was still dominated by clubs from the west of Scotland but there were now four sides from Edinburgh: Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian, St Bernard's and Leith Athletic. There was no automatic promotion or relegation between the two divisions. The bottom three clubs in Division One had to compete in an election with the top three sides from Division Two at the League AGM each year while the bottom three Division Two clubs had to apply for re-election. Division Two teams could apply for election to Division One regardless of where they finished. This system was designed to ensure that only clubs with substantial support would compete in the top flight although there were several examples of popular teams being denied elevation for political reasons. Dundee (14 votes) and Leith Athletic (8 votes) were re-elected to Division One but Renton (3 votes) were not re-elected. Clyde who finished 3rd in Division Two were elected to Division One (14 votes). Cowlairs (4 votes) and Hibernian (1 vote) were not elected to Division One. A subsequent motion by John McLaughlin of Celtic that future Division Two champions be automatically promoted was not seconded and therefore did not proceed to a vote. Thistle did not apply for re-election. Dundee Wanderers (23 votes) and Airdrieonians (19 votes) were elected. Kilmarnock (14 votes), Royal Albert (11 votes) and Linthouse (7 votes) were not elected. Cambuslang, Albion Rovers and Wishaw Thistle of the Alliance, and Raith Rovers who were non-affiliated did not figure in the voting as they could not find a seconder. Dundee Wanderers were formed by the merger of Johnstone Wanderers and Strathmore, both of the Nothern League. Airdrieonians, despite finishing bottom of the Alliance championship, were elected ahead of Royal Albert who could only muster 11 votes, 8 fewer than Airdrieonians. Wishaw Thistle were formed in 1885 moving into Recreation Park in 1888. They competed in the Scottish Federation from 1891 to 1893 before joining the truncated Alliance which they won twice. Another move in 1896 saw them join the Scottish Combination. This was very much a disaster as they finished bottom in three of the four seasons they competed. In May 1900, a merger with rivals Wishaw saw a new club at Recreation Park, Wishaw United. After securing a place in the Combination, they improved slightly on the previous seasons, but midway through the 1902-03 campaign, they resigned from the league and disbanded soon after. Recreation Park didn’t stay empty for long though as Wishaw Amateurs took up the challenge, joining both the Midland and Scottish Amateur Leagues.
